And the Scripture, foreseeing… Galatians 3:8
speaks in the manner of men, yet with the precision of God.
For it is written:
All Judea and all the region went out to John
Matthew 3:5,
yet not all without exception,
but all within the compass of those who came.
A decree went out that all the inhabited earth be registered
Luke 2:1,
yet Rome’s earth, not the whole of Adam’s sons.
All Israel and all Judah were of one heart
1 Chronicles 12:38,
yet not every individual,
but the nation in unity.
Thus the Spirit teaches
that all is not always all mathematically,
but all within a purpose,
all within a scope,
all within a people.
For Jesus healed all who were ill
Matthew 8:16,
not all sickness on earth,
but all brought to Him.
He says you will be hated by all
Matthew 10:22,
yet there are those who receive with peace
Matthew 10:13.
Thus all bears the weight of certainty,
not universality.
Paul declares he became all things to all men
1 Corinthians 9:22,
yet not an idolater,
nor a murderer,
but all in manner,
not in essence.
Thus all bends to context
as a bow to the hand that draws it.
He was in the world,
and the world was made through Him,
and the world did not know Him
John 1:10.
Yet His own knew Him
John 17:8.
So world is not every individual,
but the realm of rebellion.
The world hates Me
John 7:7.
Yet not all hated Him,
for the common people heard Him gladly.
He does not ask on behalf of the world
John 17:9,
though He came to save the world
John 3:17.
Thus world shifts by the Spirit’s design—
now humanity in sin,
now Jew and Gentile alike,
now the order of rebellion,
now the stage of redemption.
He is the propitiation for our sins,
and not for ours only,
but for the whole world
1 John 2:2.
Not every individual without exception,
but the widening of covenant mercy—
not ours only (Jews),
but the whole world (the nations).
Thus Scripture teaches us how to hear Scripture.
For God so loved the world
John 3:16,
not the tally of mankind,
but the theater of rebellion,
the realm deserving wrath
into which God sends His Son.
The world did not know Him
John 1:10.
The world hates Me
John 7:7.
He does not ask on behalf of the world
John 17:9.
The whole world lies in the power of the evil one
1 John 5:19.
The love of John 3:16
is not the love of universal salvation,
nor the love of equal intention,
but the love that breaks Israel’s boundaries,
the love that shines into darkness,
the love that calls the believing ones
from every tribe and tongue
Revelation 5:9.
For the Son is given
that everyone who believes
John 3:16
might live,
and none but these.
All that the Father gives Me will come to Me
John 6:37,
not all without distinction,
but all within the decree.
As many as had been appointed to eternal life believed
Acts 13:48,
not all men in general,
but all elect in particular.
He desires all men to be saved
1 Timothy 2:4,
yet desiring to demonstrate His wrath
Romans 9:22,
His will remains one,
His purposes manifold,
His glory the measure of every word.
Thus the Scripture itself reveals:
all is not always all,
world is not always world,
but God is always God,
and His speech is always perfect.
